Moody Sunset Over Catalina – Photo Challenge

The assignment for those who wish to participate in The Daily Post photo challenge for this week is to share a favorite sunrise or sunset.

These shots were taken at Laguna Beach, California in February 2018. Every sunset is unique, its moods ever-changing from moment to moment like the ebb and flow of the tide . . .

. . . reflects layers of bitter and sweet, darkness and light, sorrow and joy, despair and hope. Abundant hope.

Can you relate to these verses from “Sunrise, Sunset” by Sheldon Harnick?

Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears

I look back to when my four children were young and school mornings were hectic playing beat the clock day after day to get them there on time. At the beginning of each school year, I wondered how I’d ever make it through.

Now, it seems as if they grew up in a flash, and I’m amazed how swiftly the grand kids are sprouting up. I remind myself every day is a gift to be thankful for.

Yes, sunrises are as moody as life itself, full of emotions in their raw, transparent glory.

I’m reminded of the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible and its adaptation by The Byrds in the song “Turn! Turn! Turn!”

To everything
There is a season
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything
There is a season
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

To everything
There is a season
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

To everything
There is a season
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late

The last line is not part of the Book of Ecclesiastes.

What are your thoughts? Do you have a special memory of a sunrise or sunset? If you could watch the sun rise or set anywhere in the world, where would it be? Are the seasons passing quickly for you, too?

I’d love to hear from you!

I think the most recent sunsets we saw while in the Coromandel were among the most beautiful. The autumn colours were poignant and the light was special.
